Anita Mackenzie

Anita is an interdisciplinary artist and educator: a singer-songwriter, soundscape composer, fiddle player and spoken word poet. Previously an opera singer, that philosophy of art forms combining into a greater whole informs her stage work, but without the restrictions of fixed genre boundaries. She is currently exploring the complexity and liminality of mixed-race and intersectional identities informed by her lived experience, and is passionate about expanding the canon of stories that are told through art. She is a part of the Scottish BPOC writers’ network and the Scottish Asian Writers’ Group. This has given her the chance to meet and be inspired by many other writers of colour, and has facilitated a shift in confidence leading to this commission and gaining a place on Moniack Mhor’s mentored writing retreat. Anita is a lecturer in music at Perth UHI, and is studying part time for a MEd in Learning and Teaching in the Arts at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, researching barriers in education faced by students of colour.
